Boredom

2024

Boredom is a privilege, a fleeting space where vulnerability and presence can converge. Nowadays, experiencing true boredom is becoming increasingly rare. We’re surrounded by endless distractions: social media, heightened anxiety, and a cultural shift towards relentless productivity.

To explore this concept, I asked my subjects to sit on a wooden chair for an hour and do absolutely nothing. I wasn’t present in the studio; the environment was designed to induce boredom or at least encourage it.

During that hour, people approached their situation differently. Some used the time to make plans, others scrutinized the room, reminisced about loved ones, or dreamed. Not everyone found this exercise enjoyable or would choose to repeat it. Yet, many remarked on how scarce genuine boredom has become and how it contrasts sharply with the modern world’s constant demand for attention.

Boredom is a rare chance to reconnect with ourselves and reflect, unburdened by contemporary life's perpetual noise and pressure. It should be avoided voluntarily, not by force.
